Follow copy The documentary was inspired by the homonymic book by Erik Tabery published in June 2006 in
publisher house Paseka.
 
One feature is characteristic of the world of politics: expansionism, the tendency to dictate the rules of the game,
to extend own authority, to politicize socially important decisions, to staff every office according to the party
affiliation, to govern undisturbed and secure one´s own participation on governing also for the future. This
tendency became most palpable in the time of so called opposition party, thus between the years 1998 and 2002.
The film Don´t Disturb, Governing! tries to capture this very tendency and it concentrates on the time of
opposition party. Its main question is: How can political power be usurped in a democratic country. Two biggest
parties in the country and mainly their leaders at the end of the nineties finally understood that political system
can be by joint effort symplified in gradual steps so that it suits them the most. Which steps are they?

American director of animated films Gene Deitch left his family in New York in 1958 because of his new love
Zdenka and moved to Prague. What followed would exceed even the most daring imaginations of Hollywood
screenplay writers. Apart from several parts of the Tom and Jerry series and Popeye the Sailor, he shot, together
with the Czech animators, tens of short animated films for the American audience. (Film Munro won the Oscar
award in 1961). As a jazz enthusiast, he managed to record a local blues concert of the legendary John Lee
Hooker before his first official record. His life and love story is both an intelligent and entertaining story of forty
years of communism in the Czech Republic from the point of view of an American "guest".

Documentary elegy about an old man, who copes with his life and memories by painting pictures. Story of a man,
who wanted to come to terms with the notion of approaching death in his own way. Jindrich Vik was born in the
last year of the nineteenth century and his life was filled with ordinary and common events. The more
extraordinary were his interests: he loved mathematics and solving complex equations, he studied geographical
maps of the world passionately even though during his whole life he never got further than the foothills of
Krkonoše mountains.
 
Occasionally he painted. He was seventy seven when his wife died and the whole weight of life fell on him. But
how to cope with his memories, how to find sense in his life at least for himself? In frantic effort he starts to
record pieces of his life on a yellowed piece of paper, he paints his family, friends, he remembers his childhood, contemplates about God, he fables faraway lands and sea, which he has never seen. In each new picture the
waning strength of an old man is mirrored, but also the effort to capture the imagination at any cost. It was
Death that the painter felt behind his back that revived the painter´s memories and drove his fantasy persistently forward.
